William en Mary chest on standSOLD
This is a walnut chest on stand from the William and Mary period circa 1690 so it 300yrs + old, which is remarkable in itself, there arn't many things that have survived from that long ago.
This lovely English walnut is known for its lovely figuring and colour, and this one is really exeptional, the veneers on the drawfronts are all book matched, and there is lots of herringbone inlays, all rails and edges are made up out of lots of small pieces of crossgrain walnut.
The base as is always the case has had work in fact a major rebuild, probably in the Victorian period, it is strong, these stands are usually the weak point, this one has been rebuilt partly with the origonal parts some of the turned columns and the origonal stretcher rail.
The handles are later probably Victorian reproductions handmade, there is evidence that it had the origonal typical William and Mary drop handles.
The colour and finish is remarkable as its not heavily bleached by the sun, in fact it has a very consistant high gloss wax finish, which is my guess largely origonal.
This piece came out of a large Manor house in England, quite likely been in the same house all its life, it is certainly in unusually good order.
Drawers are all oak linned and have new runners, and all the locks work with one key.
